Frequently Asked Hardwood Floor Questions

Why refinish and existing hardwood floor? What does the process entail?

Due to normal wear and tear, hardwood floors need to be freshened over time. This process can be done on almost any hardwood floor (except some engineered that do not have a top layer thick enough to be sanded). To do so, all furniture must be removed from work areas to be refinished. We would then protect your home by placing plastic up to slow down air flow both in & out of work areas. Next, we sand the old finish off of your floors using sander that are connected our dust containment system. This allows for maximum dust to be collected, however, these are spinning machine, so some dust is likely to escape. We continuously clean your home as we work. Then, on your newly sanded floors, we apply your chosen finish. Your project can be anticipated to last between 3 days up to one week or more. This of course depends on the amount of square feet and condition of floors and stair treads.

What is the main difference between Unfinished and Pre-finished flooring?

Unfinished flooring is flooring that must be sanded and stained and/or finish applied after installation. Pre-finished flooring is where the flooring pieces are individually finished at a factory and only require installation.

What is a "Screen and Coat"?

This process is most utilized in rental units & some types of engineered floors. It will not fix any defect in an existing floor, such as scratches, dents or water damage. Its purpose is to put a new shine and protective layer on the flooring. However there is always the chance the new urethane coat will not properly bond to old surface and could peel away in time, bubble up in certain areas, etc. The process will take two days - one day to coat and one day to allow it to dry before furniture can be moved back. During this process, everything needs to be removed from areas.

What are prefinished floors and why are they a good option for flooring?

Prefinished hardwood floors are an excellent choice for many reasons - however, two very common reasons to choose them are convenience and ease of installation. With prefinished hardwood floors from AGW, you can walk on your floors the very same day they are installed! Prefinished hardwood floors have the UV cured urethane finish applied at factory that is extremely strong. We install these in less time because there is no on additional work required in your home. Aside from removing the existing flooring and carefully moving your furniture around the same room we are working in. The only request we have of you is that we ask you to empty draws, closets and disconnect TVs and computers so as we are installing floors you can use them!

What are some of the benefits of hardwood floors over other flooring choices?

Aside from their beauty, durability and easy maintenance - hardwood floors of any kind are hypoallergenic! According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology, approximately 20 million Americans have asthma. Additionally, millions more people suffer from environmental allergies, including seasonal allergies, pollen, pet dander and more. Unlike carpet, which can harbor all of these allergens (mold, mildew, pet stains) and can increase the occurrences of asthma attacks; hardwood floors hide none of these health hazards! No matter how many times you clean your carpets, you'll never be able to remove all the dander, dust and more. There's no disputing that hardwood floors are easy to clean and a healthier option for your home. Furthermore, to keep additional toxins out of your home and your family safe, there are many green cleaning options to choose from.
