How Much Does Hardwood Floor Installation Cost?

When homeowners begin searching for hardwood flooring, it is always helpful to know about the different options available and what may affect pricing. This way, you can ensure that the project is within your budget. Hardwood flooring is super popular and can add warmth to homes.

It can also increase the value of your home drastically. Below, we will take a look at the cost of hardwood flooring, factors that may affect pricing, and some alternatives to hardwood flooring.

The Factors That May Affect the Cost

When it comes to hardwood flooring, it is important to know that there may be several prices offered to you due to different factors. The factors below can have a significant impact on what you will need to pay when you put hardwood flooring in your home.

Room Size

The larger the area is where your flooring is being installed, the higher the cost will be for labor and installation. You will also need to pay more for the materials.

Wood Type

Hardwood flooring comes in many different types of wood. This means that each type has different pricing, colors, and durability. Usually, the cheapest wood flooring is pine which runs from $4.50 to $10 per square foot.

Both oak and hickory usually cost between $6 and $13 per square foot.

Wood Grade

Wood floors are graded by their physical characteristic. This means that wood that is graded ‘clear’ lacks imperfections and has a uniform color. ‘Select’ grade flooring has a more natural appearance and varies in color.

It will usually feature knots and mineral streaks. The most common grade is ‘No.1 Common’ which is given to wood flooring that may have wormholes and varies in color.

Wood Style and Pattern

The different patterns and styles may affect the overall cost.

Wood Thickness

Usually, standard wood flooring is roughly ¾ inch thick. This can usually cost up to $6 per square foot. Some types of hardwood flooring can even be found as thin as 5/16 inches.

Labor

Depending on how long it takes for the wood flooring to be installed, labor costs can add up. Complex room layouts and other things can raise the cost of hardwood flooring when you use a hardwood contractor.

Location

Another cost factor depends on where you live. For example, hardwood installation in New York usually costs between $2,370 and $6,080. Though, in California, costs can be between $3,150 and $9,340.

Alternatives to Hardwood

If you think that hardwood flooring may cost a little too much, there are alternatives you can consider. The alternatives below are all nice, cost-friendly options.

Engineered Vinyl Plank (EVP)

EVP, also known as Engineered Vinyl Plank, is a luxury vinyl plank. It is known as the better-looking sibling of traditional vinyl. It’s waterproof, beautiful, and goes well in any moisture-prone areas of the home.

It is much more cost-friendly compared to solid hardwood.

Wood Look Tile

Wood look tiles are an awesome alternative to solid hardwood floors. They have a modern elegance that wards off dents and scratches.

Laminate

Laminate is yet another great alternative. It is water resistant and doesn’t require a lot of upkeep to keep it looking nice. Laminate won’t stain which is why it is a family-friendly option.

Hardwood refinishing is not something you can do with laminate which gives it a shorter lifespan.
